CMM Probing Stylus

CMM Stylus CMM Probe Stylus CMM Probing Stylus Ruby Stylus

A stylus is a component of the measurement system that contacts the workpiece, causing displacement of the probe mechanism. The resulting signals are processed to obtain measurement results.

The stylus is the first point of contact between the measurement system and the workpiece. Therefore, the accuracy achieved at the contact point of the stylus is critical.

The geometric characteristics of the workpiece will determine the type and size of stylus to be used. In all cases, maximum stylus rigidity and spherical accuracy of the stylus ball are of paramount importance.

The Importance of the Stylus to Accuracy

The success of a measurement depends largely on the characteristics of the stylus in contact with the workpiece and its ability to maintain accuracy at the touch point.

If you use a stylus ball with poor sphericity, incorrect alignment, large thread tolerances, or excessive deflection under measurement due to improper design, the probe performance can easily be degraded.

Renishaw’s expertise in probe and stylus design has led to the development of a comprehensive range of styli for CMMs and machine tools, enabling customers to achieve optimal measurement accuracy.

Stylus Tips:

★ Use genuine Renishaw styli.
★ Always use the shortest and most stable stylus possible.
★ Use the largest possible stylus ball.
★ Are you using thermally stable styli? Always consider environmental conditions.
★ When assembling stylus configurations, refer to the allowable weight specified by the probe manufacturer.
★ Use as few individual components as possible.

Which CMMs Can Use Renishaw Styli?

★ Renishaw offers styli for a wide range of applications, including styli compatible with ZEISS and FARO® probes.
★ Over 500 standard models are available, suitable for CMMs of all major brands.
★ In addition to hundreds of styli for use with ZEISS probe systems, Renishaw also offers a wide range of accessories for ZEISS probe heads, including stylus holders, extension bars, joints, cubes, adaptors, as well as various other tools and accessory kits.

CMM Stylus – Overview

The CMM Stylus (also known as Coordinate Measuring Machine Probe Stylus) is the critical sensing component that enables contact‑based measurement on coordinate measuring machines (CMMs). It serves as the physical interface between the probe and the workpiece, transmitting precise coordinate information every time the stylus ball contacts a surface.

A typical CMM stylus consists of three main components: the measuring ball (most commonly made of synthetic ruby for its exceptional hardness and wear resistance), the rigid shaft (available in stainless steel, tungsten carbide, ceramic, or carbon fiber), and the threaded base (standardized connections such as M2, M3, or M5). The stylus works with extensions, adaptors, and probe heads to form a modular probing system that adapts to various measurement tasks.

With ball grades as precise as Grade 3 (0.08 μm sphericity) from leading manufacturers like Renishaw, and stiffness requirements as strict as deflection ≤0.5 μm/N, CMM styli deliver micron‑level measurement accuracy for aerospace, automotive, precision mold making, medical devices, and general engineering applications.
